The Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce aims to elevate Greater Englewood into a thriving commercial and retail hub by supporting local businesses, fostering economic growth, and cultivating a positive social environment.

Unlocking Tech Opportunities in Englewood

Englewood has long faced economic challenges, with a median per capita income of just under $15,000, significantly below Chicago's citywide average of over $37,000 . The neighborhood's unemployment rate stands at approximately 21.6%, more than double the citywide average of 8.2%

Despite these hurdles, Englewood is home to the newly established Englewood STEM High School, a state-of-the-art facility opened in 2019 to provide students with education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics . However, the school faces challenges, with only 1.1% of 11th-grade students proficient in SAT Mathematics and a graduation rate of 62.1% .

Chicago's tech sector has experienced an 18% growth in the past decade, positioning the city as a leading tech hub . Yet, communities like Englewood have not fully benefited from this expansion.

Despite decades of systemic barriers like redlining, disinvestment, and discriminatory policies, Englewood continues to stand as a symbol of strength, creativity, and community pride. The neighborhood’s resilience is woven into the fabric of its people—visionaries, builders, and changemakers who refuse to be defined by statistics.

The Opportunity Ahead

Introducing a technology-focused development in Englewood can bridge this gap by:

  • Providing Access to Tech Careers: Creating pathways for residents to enter the growing tech industry.

  • Enhancing Educational Resources: Supporting local schools like Englewood STEM High School to improve student outcomes.

  • Stimulating Economic Growth: Attracting businesses and investments to the area, leading to job creation.

By investing in technology infrastructure and education, we can empower Englewood residents, offering them opportunities that have previously been out of reach.
