Inside the Field: Solar Training Cohort Learns Utility-Scale Solar in Manteno, IL

ree

The Englewood Shared Renewables (ESR) training program took learning beyond the classroom with a hands-on visit to Knobelsdorff Energy’s utility site in Manteno, Illinois.

Participants had the opportunity to tour the expansive solar installation site, gaining firsthand insight into how large-scale renewable energy systems come together. The walkthrough provided a behind-the-scenes look at the equipment, safety protocols, and coordination required to bring solar power projects to life.

Following the tour, the class engaged in a meet-and-greet lunch with the Knobelsdorff Energy team—an invaluable chance to connect with industry professionals, ask questions, and deepen their understanding of clean energy careers.

This experience allowed students to see how the concepts they’ve been studying translate to real-world applications. From understanding the layout of utility solar fields to the technical and physical requirements for working on-site, the visit highlighted the importance of skill, safety, and teamwork in every phase of installation.

As ESR continues to prepare Englewood - sustaining jobs in the growing clean energy sector, opportunities like this reinforce the program’s mission: empowering participants to be both the builders and beneficiaries of the clean energy future.
